Oscar Woods, the medical superintendent of the District Lunatic Asylum, Kilkenny, informs me that the superstition has nearly died out since this asylum was opened, about thirty years ago. Woods gives a different etymology, namely, bright, for galt; the valley in that case deriving its name in contradistinction to that on the other side.

" There are two public lunatic asylums established by the State, one at Charlestown, a suburb of Boston, and one at Worcester, a thriving little town 31 miles from it. The latter is admirably situated, and well managed.
It owes its existence to Horace Maun. He was two years president of the Senate, and laboured till he accomplished this good work.
